In 1965, Dr. Jaakko Hildenkari commissioned Finnish architect Matti Suuronen to create a "sky cabin." Suuronen responded with a distinctive flying saucer-shaped house made of plastic, embodying the 1960s' optimism for space travel. Ploykem Ltd. in Helsinki began production, with the first unit appearing in March 1968. The name "Futuro" was coined in October 1968, when the third unit was exhibited in London. Only 20 Futuro houses were produced in Finland between 1968 and 1978, though global production numbers under various licensing agreements remain unknown.
