Qala Fort in Ghanzi, Afghanistan was the site of the Battle of Ghanzi during the First Anglo-Afghan War.

The Battle of Ghanzi took place on Tuesday 23rd July 1839. The British were victorious in the battle which is still viewed as pivotal in Afghanistan’s relationship with foreign powers and shaped the geopolitical dynamics of cental Asia for many years.

In the short term the battle secured Afghanistan for the British Empire and reduced the risk of British India being invaded by the Russian Empire through the Khyber and Bolan Passes.

An earthquake measuring moment magnitude 6.2 struck the Durand Line between Afghanistan and Pakistan on 6/22/22. The earthquake destroyed hundreds of houses in Afghanistan. According to the USGS, the earthquake measured 5.9 and occurred at a depth of 10 km. It was felt in the southern parts of India, in Pakistan's capital Islamabad and eastern Punjab province, and in Iran. Some factors led to a disproportionate number of casualties for the moderate size of the shock, with at least 1,000 people dead and 1,500 injured, making it the deadliest earthquake in 2022.

2022 Kabul Sikh Temple Attack

On Saturday 18th June 2022 it was reported that an attack had taken place at Sikh Temple in the Afghanistan capital which had resulted in the death of one worshiper.

It was reported further that at least one grenade had been used during the attack. Which was followed shortly afterwards by a car bomb which was detonated in the area but caused no casualties.

It would appear that the gunmen had attempted to storm the temple by crashing into it in a car laden with explosives but that for some reason the explosion occurred before they reach their target.

2021 Kabul airport suicide bombing

On 8/26/21 at 17:50 local time, during the evacuation from Afghanistan, a suicide bombing occurred near Abbey Gate at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul. Shortly after, a second bombing occurred several dozen meters away. At least 103 people were killed in the attacks, including 13 US service members, who were the first American military casualties in Afghanistan since February 2020.

On 5/8/2021, a car bombing, followed by 2 more IED blasts, occurred in front of Sayed al-Shuhada school in Dashte Barchi, leaving at least 68 dead and 165 injured. The majority of the casualties were girls between 11 and 15 years old. The attack took place in a neighborhood that has frequently been attacked by militants belonging to ISIL over the years.

On 13 April 2017, the second largest non-nuclear bomb known as the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB), was dropped by the United States in Nangahar’s Achin District in eastern Afghanistan to destroy tunnel complexes used by ISIS. It was dropped from the rear cargo door of an Air Force Lockheed C-130 Hercules.

It was reported that 36 ISIS fighters were killed in the bombing.

Though Google Earth acknowledged and credited this find ( Neil OHanlon ) to me . I thought I'd share it with you . There was debate as to whether it was inflight or ditched . The answer is now confirmed . It is an MQ1 Predator Drone in flight . In 2005 SEAL team 10 were ambushed by approx 10 ( Ten- twelve ) Anti Coalition Militia , which resulted in the single largest loss of life in Afghanistan prior to 2011 . Whilst researching this event I found this , however for many months thought that it was fake .

Kabul Serena Hotel is a luxury hotel in central Kabul, Afghanistan. It is set in landscaped gardens, overlooking the city's famous Zarnegar Park. Originally built in 1945, the hotel has been completely refurbished and extended in recent years, reopening in 2005. The Hotel houses the Australian embassy in Afghanistan. It has also twice been the subject of terrorist attacks, once in January 2008 and once more in March of 2014.
The 2014 Kabul Serena Hotel attack was a firearm attack on the restaurant of the Kabul Serena Hotel, in Kabul, Afghanistan on March 20, 2014 for which the Taliban claimed responsibility. Four teenage gunmen entered the restaurant of the hotel, opening fire with handguns against patrons and sparking a three-hour standoff with Afghan security forces. At least nine people were reported killed in the assault, including five Afghans and four foreigners.

Pul-e Khishti Mosque

Pul-e Khishti Mosque is the largest mosque in Kabul, Afghanistan. Located in the center of old Kabul, the Pul-e Khishti Mosque can be identified by its large blue dome. The mosque originally was erected in the late 18th Century, but largely rebuilt under Zahir Shah in the late 1960s. It was damaged during recent fighting in the area, but is one of the few buildings in the area which has had restoration work done on it.
Many Kabulis assert that the imam of this mosque for many years in the early part of the 20th century was an Englishman who had converted to Islam, and that the imam returned to England after relinquishing his position at the mosque.
