The article describes this a as a vehicle for collecting imagery (Apple Camera Car) but it actually looks more like a self driving vehicle to me. Also if this were a camera vehicle the parallax distortion introduced by spacing the cameras so widely seems like it would be a problem.
My guess, it is what comes next after Street View. 3D Street View
