SS-badged Chevelles starting from the 1971 model year seemed more like an appearance package than a "true" performance option because this was the time they would be available with any optional V8 engine. 1972 models were distinctive for their single unit parking/side marker lights and a revised twin-bar grille, and due to increasingly stricter fuel economy regulations, the highest-rated power of an SS was 270 for the 454, as GM declared that all of their engines be rated at their net ratings.
