A large fire at Dapto Substation in Yallah Bay broke out at approximately 15:00 on Saturday 18th June 2022.
The Australian Energy Market Operator in a statement confirmed that one transformer at the station was fully alight and a second was at risk. Unconfirmed reports suggested that over 100,000 litres of oil could be alight.
Residents close to the plant were warned to stay inside and secure all doors and windows as a large smoke plume affected Wollongong and Unanderra. The smoke also affected flights in and out of Shellharbour Airport.
It was reported that 60 firefighters had attended the scene to bring the blaze under control. There were no reports of anyone being hurt or injured in the incident.
