Those are 'igloos' used to store explosives or weapons. It looks like a military weapons depot with a helicopter landing pad.

I worked there as an MP guarding those weapons from 1989-1991. There are about 15 bunkers that contained weapons, along with a mainanance bunker. The site was guarded by tower guards in each of the 4 corners, 1 central tower and 1 roving 3 man team in a humvee armed with everything rifles and an M-60 machine gun. Being a "tower rat" wasn't much fun, but looking back at it now it was a great life experience.

Both the conventional and classified sites were closed. Only the German area on the backside is still in use. I closed the conventional side down in 1992, the classified side was closed just before that. I visited the site last year and the vegetation is so overgrown that you can barely see the gates any longer.

83-84 , YES IT WAS BORING , ONE-HALF YEARS OF INSPECTIONS. WENT IN NORMAL AND CAME OUT CRAZY. THE CLUB (POINT) AND OLD MILL WAS A BREAK FROM IT ALL. WHEN THEY INSTALLED THE SPEAKERS ON THE LINE, I MADE IT INTO A LOUD STEREO AT NIGHT WHEN SOG's WERE ASLEEP.

I was there from May 1955 until I shipped back to the States in July 1957. At first we did not have a full PX or Service Club. Later in 1956 they were added. While I was there we had no dogs or towers. We walked 4 hours on and 4 hours off in a 24 hour of duty with our M1's. Then off for 1 day another day for training. We took a Army bus into Heilbronn for Pass.

I was with the 23rd Ord Co. in Heilbronn, Germany 1965-1967. We had weapons stored in the classified section and supplied personnel as guards out their TDY. We also supplied all the guards for the conventional side as well. I was NCOIC of the security office for the 23rd. I remember those load out alerts, with the generals running around every where. Those were the days my friends.

'83-'85 Tower Rat, Gate 3, SAT Patrol, CA Yeah, the duty sucked. We were so short handed until we got an entire platoon sent to us. Oh, the Old Mill, Mom & Pops, and so many other hangouts....Good Times! Remember pulling Fog Guard? Boy that was a treat! I got 3 article 15's my first 3 months at the 'Bach'. LOL! Must have hung with the wrong crowd but then again.....I think we were all the wrong crowd! I have lost touch with most everyone. Towerrat.com isn't a whole lot of help. I was there in 1965-66 working in commo. The post was a lot smaller than what I see on Google now. Lots of both fond and bad memories there. We worked the communications station that was attached to the main guardhouse just inside the fence. There was a secure commcenter there along with a switchboard. Mostly I worked in the radio teletype stations mounted on a deuce and a half next to commo office, which was up and running 24/7 during the cold war days.

I was at the bach from 90 to 92. I was an NCO when I got there. Worked with a lot of good troops. I learned that if u don't have it together starting out, this assigned could mess u up. Saw quite a few young kids lose it. Loved Germany and the couple I rented my place from. They were good to my son and I.
We got to leave Germany early when the shutdown began.

525th Ord '68-'69

I just returned from a vacation in Germany. When the wife and I stopped at a store in Siegelsbach for directions a Forest Miester was there and offered to give me a tour of the old post (he had a key to the gate). Luck was with me that day, I would not have got in without him. I stood in my old barracks room that had the door blown off during a recent German Army building entry drill. (best thing that ever happened to it since the darn lock always gave me trouble anyway!). The whole post was overgrown with trees and all seemed to be returning to nature. Not a painted rock to be seen anywhere. The motor pool where I got most of the gas for my old VW was still intact. The bunkers on the hill now had solar panels on top instead of troops swinging sling blades.

Until now this place was a fading memory and something that my wife would endure my stories of. She now appreciates the memories. To see the place in this condition was like attending a funeral of an old friend. But I was glad to be there and put that memory to rest.

I was there from Feb 82 to Jun 83 in Second Platoon. I worked the last six months with Supply (Voluntarly before a large drug bust occurred so they had me go back to the Hill to protect my reputation [I am a Christian and everyone knew I did not do drugs so it was senseless but I appreciate the jesture]). I wound up at Siegelsbach when at our Brigade Headquarters some guy in line when they said: Siegelsbach or Fishbach; what the 'H***' is a Fishbach! Glad I was not standing next to him. The SFC said you Five (which included me) go to Siegelsbach and YOU TWO go to FISHBACH (man Siegelsbach was bad but Fishbach was far worse and on a Y in the road not even a town near by! So glad I stayed in the Middle! Anyways I was confronted at Frankfort: Ah you are an MP! Did you do any White Cap Duty? I Said NO I was in 1st CAV and spent most of my time Deployed (Ft. Chaffee twice & Ft. Irwin before it was ever called NTC) He asked did you work the Road? I Said YES! Oooops! Well he sent me to our Brigade HQ where he knew I would get some very choice duty! Hence I wound up at Siegelsbach!

I was the NCOIC of the Munitions Storage Area from August 1989 until September 1992 and was part of 525th Ord. It was a great place and I have very fond memories of the place and surrounding areas as well. Unfortunately I had the honor of overseeing the movement of all weapons out of the place and closed it down, I was the last US soldier there and I locked the gates after we moved everything out I then turned the keys over to the German Government.

The beginning of the end for Siegelsbach came in the spring of 1968 when a new weapons assembly building was approved by NATO. When the plans arrived on post, it was obvious that to build it as planned would require shutting down explosive storage in a large number of the igloos due to explosive safety problems with the building. It was too late to change plans that had been approved by all the NATO countries but a number of munitions were already scheduled for transfer to temporary storage in another installation. I don't know if the plans were ever implemented because I transferred out that summer but know that major disruption in construction and operations occurred.
The installation was a "Closed Post" operated by the 525th Ordnance Company, a part of the Advanced Weapons Support Command. It was located on an old Wehrmach installation and consisted of two parts. One was new with NATO Earth Covered Magazines and tightly secured with high fences, dogs and tall wood frame guard towers. The guards carried live ammunition and often on those pitch black German nights when jumpy guards would be disturbed, probably by deer, shots would be fires. Often to reduce boredom the guards would remove the propellant from their cartridges and replace it with straw. There were numerous burn marks on the floors of the guard towers from the flash of the propellant when it was ignited. All of us were amazed that none of the old wooden towers ever caught fire because of it. Each year as the guards had to requalify, we would have numerous misfires due to the lack of propellant in the cartridges.
The unused part of the depot was an old Wehrmach ammunition storage area, reputed to have been used to store the NAZI rocket warheads. It was heavily wooded with of the old storage bunkers and roads imbedded in the ground about five feet. It was mostly unused in the late 1960's. A few old magazines were used by the 23rd Ordnance Company to store ammunition (mostly Honest John Rocket motors) for USAREUR/Seventh Army units.
There were old concrete pads out behind the depot used to store inert and mostly obsolete munitions parts. Early in the 1960's they became the subject of a major Stars and Stripes story about a "Nuclear Warhead" sent to the Heilbronn power plant to be burned. Actually it was a NON NUCLEAR WARHEAD, NON EXPLOSIVE SKIN SECTION that had, inadvertantly been left inside its box when the box had been sent in to be burned. Several others were discovered in those outdoor pads and transported to another installation for eventual distruction. One of them eventually became the steeple for the chapel at US Army Fischbach Army Depot.

I served there from 1970-72 as a truck driver and ammunition storage specialist. What a job? I was on the road almost daily, plenty of work moving, maintaining and storing the damn toys. I was my first time outside the USA, and really enjoyed the tour. Not much at camp, but outside, another world.
Remember SFC. Campos (my platton sergeant) My partners SGT. Swenney, SGT. Greer. Sgt. Gutshall, Golidy, Finch. Tate, and many others. I was the only spanish speaker in the unit, so when I met this guy who learned german at high school, we start going together everywhere, so we met alot of italian, german, spaniard, and people from many countries in Europe. We even dance with german at private parties and had a great time. We liked to go Bad Rappenau and Wimpfen. Eiscafe Cortina, my closed friends at Rappenau. What a time...

Siegelsbach was my first PCS station as a Lieutenant. I was assigned to the Storage and Issue Platoons from 1983 to 1985. I worked with great guys like Chief Al Kenyon, LT Bob Best, LT Gerhardt Schneider, Lt Kim, SFC Dock, SSG Morales, SPC Shindler, SPC Herring, SFC Brown, SFC Tiller, SPC Toussaint, SPC Copani, SPC Malarett., SPC Koons, LT Mark Jolly, LT Sylvia Enz, SGT Woods, SSG Hugg, SGT Wilmoth and many others. Like everything else I had good and bad moments there.

The convoy training and field training were good experiences. Thankfully I never got lost. I remember one night in the woods the Captain I was with apparently got disoriented. I told him where we had to go to get back to the platoon camp site and he didn’t heed me. We rode around for a while and he became frustrated. I told him again where we had to go. His response was “why didn’t you tell me”. I got the impression he wanted to save face. I also remember in training we provided better perimeter defense than the field Artillery guys. Here’s another one…Take those rocks out of the tires! Dennis Vega reedbro@comcast.net

I was there from 85' until 87' 3rd platoon E--3 Martin came out of Basic F-12 Ft. Mac. Lot's of memories at the hill. I remember the Lorilie which was the MP bar down town. Blackstone was my room mate, Vuksta, Broom, Ball, Sandra, Carmen, Ebbinger, etc were my friends. The big and loud parties in our room blasting so loud it could be heard from walking back from town at night or heard at the tower line. A first Lt showing up at our room with a m-16 to make us turn it down. Memories! dbm98@att.net

I was in Siegelsbach in 1960 assigned to the 101st Ord Bn HQ. Later that year we moved in to Heilbronn. Both the 23d Ord Co and the 525th Ord Co were part of the battalion. It was a special weapons maintenance battalion. One of the company commanders of the 525 went on to become a 3-star and the S2 of the 101st Ord Bn went on to become a 2-star. I left an E4 and went on to retire a Major. Ron Scurry

Joe Dunbar here. Was at Siegelsbach from 84-85. My last days there involved me telling a Sgt to go F himself after he told me to get on my feet in the central tower. I didn't know who he was when I told him that. I got a AR15. Mostly I smoked a lot of hash, drank a lot of beer and hung at the VIP in Mosbach. I remember getting about 3.5 DMarks to a dollar and living large. My old girlfriend Marietta Kriet was a bonus. Oh the times I had. One sad thing was a black dude who was a friend got busted selling hash at the front gate. Last I knew of him was he got many years in Leavenworth. I can't imagine that. I hope he's ok now. I wasn't selling hash but I stayed stoned. I remember old peg leg Sgt major...? I was one of very few who referred to him as TOP. He was a good guy. Think he got his leg shot up in the NAM. I remember getting there on a cold December night in 87, I said to self wtf have I gotten myself into. 2nd Platoon was my home until departing in December 89. Made some great friends, wish I could see their faces today. I can say being stationed at the Bach and working the Hill made me love being anywhere else but there, looking into the dark foggy nights with only 5 reliefs sometimes made your mind wonder whom did you piss off back at Ft. McClellan to get stuck there.

I was with the 556th in 71-72. When I got there the Army was "early releasing" short timers and it left us short handed. Worked 12 on 12 off for months at a time. Boring. But a good group of guys. And for a draftee, it beat the alternative of "The Jungle". Can't remember a lot of names, except for "Pink" Floyd an overweight lifer NCO.

CPT Tucker was the XO and a great guy. All of my memories of the Depot were good ones. Loved going to Andy's for lunch and after work for the best schnitzles ever and he married the owner of the Isenbaun. CW4 Vanhook was our Chief Technician at the Depot and also a great guy. I ETS'd out of the Army from the Depot and had my going away party at Andy's. If anyone remembers any of this send my a email at jrfair5207@yahoo.com. Troyer, Marc "tissues" Yarrish (remember the F*** Iran button?), "hop sing", Tom Beddinghaus, Bryce waycob, and others. I too saw many guys go nuts in that place; drugs, alcohol, isolation, and 12 hour shifts. Check out the pics on the tower rat websites from this time period. I was assigned to the 525th Ord Co from June 1960 to December 1962. I worked as a technician in rocket maintenance. I was stationed there during the time the Berlin Wall went up as well as the period covering the Cuba missile crisis. We all figured we would be one of the first to be hit if war broke out with the Russians. We drank to that every night in the Gasthaus’ in Siegelsbach, Bad Rappenau, or Bad Wimpfen. I left the Army in 1963. I have traveled to Germany on business over the last 50 years but never went back to Siegelsbach. I was 17 years old when I first joined and it has been nearly 59 years since that time, but I can still remember the layout including the motor pool, barracks, and PX. Good memories and yes I am glad there was no war at that time.

I was stationed there from 1960 to 1963. I just went back for a visit (5/12/19). I think our military base is now a recycling plant. In the 60s Siegelsbach was a poor farming village. Now it is a thriving farming village with most houses being well kept. There are some nice restaurants. Since I was a truck driver during my tour in Germany, I drove through many historic villages but did not really visit them. Outstanding historic buildings, churches and castles are in Bad Wimpfen, Bad Rappenau and Tubbingen. Must go again. Jim DREEBEN 631-834-2525

Got a call on the landline a few minutes later from "someone" asking if it was still there! Also saw a guy licking the back of a used stamp. 525th Ordnance Company Assembly Platoon, 1968 to 1970. Maintained and serviced special weapons both at the Bach and missile sites scattered throughout southern Germany.

Very fond memories of the German people, the local food, many historic places, beautiful countryside and great public transportation. Wish the same could have been said of the U.S. Army. In the way of clarification, sending young U.S. men far from their societal and family constraints back home brought out the best and the worst in enlisted men as well as in the commissioned and non commissioned officers. Sadly, many Germans bore the brunt of this, often seeing and experiencing the worse from their American military guests.

Returned to Germany several times in recent years. The scenic spots like Speyer and Heidelberg are now over run with foreign tourists and there are pizza places on every corner -- something unheard of back in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Thomas Wolfe once wrote, "You can never go back home." So it is with the many fond memories of Germany from those bygone years. A ride up the Heidelberg tram cost about 50 pfennig back then. It's now more than 10 Euros. Hauptstrasses are now blocked off as pedestrian thoroughfares while surrounding streets have become a maze on one way traffic. The list goes on. Perhaps U.S. cities are no different in that regard.

We now live in a time where NATO is trying to justify its continued existence by rattling one saber or another. The expenditure in national treasure should have fallen precipitously immediately following the fall of the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact nations, but no, things struggled on for decades until we have the circumstances in which we now find ourselves.

The Cold War was allegedly fought to counter the Soviet Union and usher in an era of peace. We former Cold War warriors served to that end, but the Cold War and even a few hot ones continued on in a steady stream one after another like a "Wheat Thins" commercial.
