Hawk was born in Kettering, Ohio and grew up in nearby Centerville, where he starred at linebacker for the Centerville Elks football team, being named All-State in both 1999 and 2000. He then played football for the Ohio State University from 2002-2005, winning the BCS National Championship as a freshman in 2002. After his senior season in 2005, he won the Lombardi Award as the best linebacker in college football and was a unanimous first-team All-American.

Hawk’s professional career began after he was selected fifth overall in the 2006 NFL Draft by the Packers. He played a total of nine seasons for the Packers, winning Super Bowl XLV in 2010. He was released by the Packers in 2016 and signed a two-year contract with the Bengals. After one season, he was released and finished his career with the Falcons, appearing in only one game for them in 2016. He officially retired on January 7, 2017.
