The duel between these two prominent Americans took place nearby and has been memorialized since 1806. Originally there was a 14 foot marker placed at the spot by the Saint Andrew Society. By 1820 none of the markers remained as they were vandalized. The two boulders where the duelers were thought to have stood were placed at the site between 180-1857. Hamilton's boulder was believed to have been used to rest on after he was shot. There are no accounts from the duel to verify the boulder stories. The current bust of Hamilton dates back to 1935 and replaced the 1894 addition which was thrown over a cliff by vandals.
