The Alligator Reef Lighthouse was established in 1873 and is four nautical miles east of Indian Key. The lighthouse is named after the U.S. Navy Anti-Piracy schooner, "Alligator" which went aground in this location in 1822.
Today the site is popular for snorkeling/diving as it offers crystal clear views of coral and fish.
