The city was originally an ancient Thracian city near Kabile in modern-day Bulgaria. It was established around 2000 BC by the Thracians and was one of the most important cities centres of Thrace.

In 71 BC it became part of the Roman Empire after the troops of Marcus Lucullus conquered the city. It was included into the Roman province of Thracia in 45 BC. It was a major military and trading post during the 3rd and 2nd century BC.

The city was destroyed by the Avars and never rebuilt.
