The aqueduct was built by the Romans to supply water for the Roman colony of Emerita Augusta (now Merida). The aqueduct was 25 m in height. Only a small stretch of the aqueduct remains today. This stretch consists of 38 arched pillars in a course of 880 m.

It is thought to have been constructed in the 1st century AD with a second phase of building or renovation in 300 AD.

The aqueduct was one of three built in the area. The other two being 15 km long Aqua Augusta fed by the Cornalvo reservoir and San Lazaro fed by underground channels. The aqueduct is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
