The Detroit Vipers were a minor league hockey team that played from 1994-2001. They competed in the International Hockey League and played their games at The Palace of Auburn Hills.
In 1994, the Salt Lake Golden Eagles franchise was purchased and moved to Detroit. The Vipers had a unique color scheme - Aqua, Black, Eggplant, Green, Red, and White. The team name came from a sponsorship agreement with Chrysler, who made the Dodge Viper sports car.
The Vipers won the Turner Cup championship in 1997 over the Long Beach Ice Dogs and lost in the Finals against the Chicago Wolves in 1998. They served as the farm club for the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning from 1999-2001. When the IHL folded in the summer of 2001, a decision was made to close the book on the Vipers franchise.
