The Ballaure Reservoir Dam was built in 1884 by the Ramsey Water Works Company, 1859 to form an impounding reservoir to supply water to the nearby town of Ramsey. It replaced two earlier dams, lower down the Ballaure Stream, as demand for water increased particularly with the growth of tourism during the later years of the 19th century in the summer months.

The dam is 17m in height and is formed from an earth embankment faced with stone on the water side. The reservoir behind the dam has a capacity of 70,000 cubic meters.

The Ballure Reservoir ceased to supply drinking water in 2005 and is now used solely for recreational purposes and in particular for fly fishing and spin fishing.
