Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben (9/17/1730 - 11/28/1794) aka the "Drillmaster of the American Revolution" was a Prussian military officer who volunteered and served as inspector general for the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He is best known for teaching essential military drills, tactics and writing "Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States". The Prussian brought discipline at a crucial time in the war and later served as George Washington's chief of staff.

The memorial sits on von Steuben's 16,000 acre land grant gifted to him after the war. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.
