Bear Butte, (Mathó Pahá as known by the Sioux and Noahȧ-vose to the Cheyenne) is a butte held sacred by the Plains Indians. The site was visited by Red Cloud, Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull as well as a council of many nations to discuss the growing presence of settlers. Today pilgrimages are made to the butte to leave prayer cloths and tobacco bundles.

The site was designated to the NRHP on 6/19/1973.
