Widely credited as being the heart of Central Park, Bethesda Terrace was created by Central Park designers Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, who originally envisioned the terrace to surround most of the lake as a promenade.

At the end of "The Avengers", Thor takes Loki and the Tesseract back to Asgard here and the rest of the Avengers team goes their separate ways.
