Billy Connolly was born in Anderston, Glasgow, Scotland in 1942 to a poor family. They had a two-room apartment and no hot water. He and his sister were primarily raised by his aunts after his mother abandoned them. His father was fighting in World War II and was abusive upon his return.

After working as a boilermaker for several years, Billy Connolly quit to pursue a career as a folk singer. His first solo album, “Billy Connolly Live!”, was released in 1972 and featured a combination of comedic songs and short monologues. His follow-up record, “Solo Concert”, launched him to stardom and he was selling out theatres by the end of 1974 while developing a reputation as an edgy and profane comic prone to controversial jokes.

Billy Connolly made his film debut in 1978 in the thriller “Absolution” and went on to appear in “Indecent Proposal”, “Muppet Treasure Island” and “The Boondock Saints”. He has also found success as a voice actor in “Pocahontas” and “Brave”.

Billy Connolly retired from performing in 2019 due to Parkinson’s disease, with which he was diagnosed in 2013.

Bill Connolly has been married twice and has five children. He was married to his first wife, interior designer Iris Pressagh, in 1969. They separated in 1981 and divorced in 1985. He married his current wife, psychologist and performer Pamela Stephenson, in 1989.
