Birthplace of Potato Chips

Birthplace of Potato Chips

Saratoga Springs, New York (NY), US
On August 24, 1853, at Moon's Lake House (aka Lake Lodge), the first potato chips were prepared and served. A patron at the restaurant complained that his fried potatoes were too soggy and thick. He had his plate sent back to the cook with instructions to cut the potatoes thinner and fry them longer.

Chef George Crum took offense to this request and responded by cutting the potatoes as thin as possible, fried them to a crisp, and covered them with extra salt. Instead of angering the patron, Crum was surprised to learn that his creation was loved. Soon "Saratoga Chips" were found on menus around the area and eventually became a snack food staple around the world.
