Inspired by the design of the military Jeep, British Leyland began production of the Mini Moke in 1964, in which 14,518 of them were produced there up to 1968. In Australia, where they have a cult following as off-road vehicles, 26,000 were made between 1966 and 1981, and Cagiva of Portugal built around 10,000 units from 1980 until its end of production in 1993. A Mini-based utility vehicle, they are popular among restorers and in island countries as beach buggies; it was also the first vehicle to be driven on the sparsely populated Pitcairn Island, doing so in the 1970s.
