The first BMW E39 wagons began to be sold in November 1996 for the 1997 model year. E39s especially in this configuration had gained a cult following among enthusiasts for its handling, V8 performance in the 535i and the 540i (trim levels below the 535i instead had an I6), and the availability of a manual transmission, a rare option for a wagon in the U.S. market. However, there was no M5 wagon for this generation.
