After graduating from High School, he drove a school bus, served in the Navy, and then made his living shoeing horses.
He earned his Real Estate and Broker's licenses in the '50's and opened Schaefer Land Company in Newhall with his first wife, Dorothy. Schaefer Land specialized in housing and development in the Santa Clarita Valley. In 1970 Jim married Peggy Sherwood and together they built Schaefer Oil Company and Schaefer Leasing and Investment.
A true oil tycoon, he split his time between his home in Malibu, Beverly Hills and the oil fields of Bakersfield.
