Bridgestone Arena

Nashville, Tennessee (TN), US
This 17,113 seat arena is home to the NHL's Nashville Predators.

When it opened in 1996, it was simply named the Nashville Arena. Naming rights were sold in 1999 bringing the new name of the Gaylord Entertainment Center. After the Gaylord naming rights expired in 2005, the original name of the venue was brought back.

In 2007, the Sommet Group (pronounced 'so-may') bought the naming rights, prompting the arena's name change to the Sommet Center. The three year deal was abrubtly ended on November 25, 2009, when Sommet stopped making payments after learning the Predators purchased souvenirs from some of Sommet's competitors.

In February 2010, the Bridgestone tire company acquired the naming rights to the building

I remember a time when a sports fan (like myself) could easily have memorized the names of all professional stadiums and arenas in America and Canada for baseball, football, hockey and basketball. Today it's not as easy. Bridgestone? I didn't even know this name existed and I wonder how long before it has a new name. It's just not right.

Most Predators fans I know prefer the Bridgestone name over Gaylord or Sommet. With any luck, the Bridestone deal will last for many years.

When the name changed in midseason last year, I caught several visiting TV announcers using the old name, either out of ignorance or out of habit.
