Captain James Cook (11/7/1728 - 2/14/1779) the British explorer, navigator, cartographer and Royal Navy captain was killed near this monument as he attempted kidnap and ransom the Hawaiian King, Kalaniʻōpuʻu.

Cook was the first recorded European to have contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands. He was also the first recorded person to circumnavigate of New Zealand.
