After discovering Admiral Wilhelm Canaris' involvement in plans to kill Hitler, the admiral was dismissed from the German Navy and sent to Castle Lauenstein under arrest in 1944. He was held here for several months before being sent to Flossenburg Concentration Camp where he was executed on April 9, 1945.
