Cheyenne Steam shop & roundhouse

Cheyenne Steam shop & roundhouse

Cheyenne, Wyoming (WY), US
These two buildings are all that is left of the old roundhouse and machine shop. You can see the foundation of where the roundhouse use to be radiate out from the turntable. The roundhouse use to be 48 stalls, now it is just 7. It Houses the Up Steam Heritage fleet of passenger cars from the heyday of the railroad. It also house to steam locomotives, one is waiting for someone to restore it and the other sadly is used for spare parts for the 3985. For someone who likes old steamers this was a sad sight.

The building to the right is the current steam shops. is houses the UP Steam fleet. The Challenger (4-6-6-4) #3985 is one of 105 built and is the only one still operating. It is also the largest operating steam loco in the world. The only steam loco larger was the "big boy". There were only 25 of the giants built, only 8 survive and they are all static displays. The 844 is the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific, and the only steamer to never retire.
