Closeup of Abu Simbel Temples

The Abu Simbel Temples were originally carved out of the mountainside in the 13th century BC during the reign of Ramesses II. They act as a monument to the king and his queen Nefertari. They commemorate Ramesses II victory at the Battle of Kadesh over the Hittite Empire.
