Congleton is a small market town in the ceremonial (historically)country of Cheshire. Since 1 April 2009 it has been in the Cheshire East Council unitary authority area.
It is located approximately half-way between the cities of Manchester and Stoke-on-Trent in the Dane Valley.
The town is known locally as Beartown from a supposed incident in the 1620’s when funds saved for a new Bible were diverted to purchase a new bear for the ‘sport’ of bearbaiting which was popular at the time.
