David Jason was born David John White in Edmonton, Middlesex in 1940. He had a twin brother who died during childbirth. After leaving school, Jason trained as an electrician for six years before giving up the trade to become an actor.
Jason’s first television role was the part of Bert Bradshaw in Crossroads. He was then cast in the children’s series Do Not Adjust Your Set, along with future Monty Python members Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin. His recurring role as the farcical superhero Captain Fantastic became especially popular and survived after the program ended in 1969.
Throughout the 1970s, Jason worked on radio comedies, variety shows, television series, and on stage in the West End. It was in 1981 that he landed his breakout role in Only Fools and Horses. The popular show ran for seven series between 1981 and 1991 and had sixteen Christmas specials, which aired through 2003. In 1992, he began his role Detective Inspector Jack Frost on the police procedural A Touch of Frost. Though the show ran through 2010, Jason stepped down from his role in 2008.
In 1993, Jason was made Officer of the Order of the British Empire, and in 2005, he was knighted.
David Jason has been married to Gill Hinchcliffe since 2005. They have a daughter named Sophie Mae.
