It can be used for football, cricket, rugby union, and athletics. It was due to open in late 2009, but the financial crisis in Dubai has put it's construction on hold . It will have a capacity of 60,000 spectators. It is part of the new mixed-use sports city currently being constructed in Dubai, Dubai Sports City.
