Entrance to a Greek Oracle in a cave beside Lago d'Averno. Represented in The Aeneid. Virgil wrote "Facilis descensus Averno" — "the way to hell is easy" — about the Lago d'Averno, which was long regarded as the entrance to Hades; nearby is the ancient spring thought to be the river Styx, and the Mare Morto, where Charon ferried to the underworld. Aeneas found the Lago d'Averno and its entrance with the help of the Cumean Sybil.
