Ephesus was one of the most important ancient Greek cities in Asia Minor. It was distinguished for the Temple of Artemis (Diana), who had her chief shrine there, for its library, and for its theatre, which would have been capable of holding 25,000 spectators. The Temple of Artemis was, according to Pausanias, the largest building of the ancient world and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Almost nothing is left of it on the site, most of its surviving artwork resides now in British Museum.
