Fenestrelle fortress is the largest fortified structure in Europe and the longest construction in masonry after the Great Wall of China. It is an enormous stone building extending for around five kilometres in the Chisone valley, and it covers a rise in height of almost 700 metres, on a surface area of 1,300,000 sq. m. In 1708, two years after the Battle of Turin, Vittorio Amedeo II drove out the garrison controlling the Moutin Fort near Fenestrelle and chose it as the headquarters of the most imposing defensive work in his Kingdom.
