On March 15, 1899, the City of Pittsburgh approved an ordinance which established the design of the city's official flag. The black and gold color scheme was taken from the family coat of arms of the city's namesake, William Pitt. The symbols on the flag are a fortress and the city's coat of arms.

All of Pittsburgh's major professional sports teams have adopted the city's black and gold colors.
