Fort Scammell was built in 1808 as part of the national second system of fortifications. The fort is named after General Alexander Scammell who was killed during the American Revolution at Yorktown.
From 1907 to 1937 the area was used as an immigration quarantine station and was considered the Ellis Island of the North.
