The Gate of Trajan is a historic mountain pass named after the Roman Emperor Trajan. Trajan ordered a fortress built on the location to act as a symbolic border between Thrace and Macedonia.
On August 17, 986 the Battle of the Gates of Trajan was fought between the Byzantine and the Bulgarians. Tsar Samuil of Bulgaria halted the Byzantines on their campaign to invade Bulgarian lands.
