General Sherman

General Sherman is a giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) located in the Sequoia National Park. The tree is among the tallest, widest and longest-lived trees on the planet. Its height is 83.8 meters (275 ft), diameter 7.7 meters (25 feet) and estimated age is 2,300-2,700 years.

The tree was named in 1897 after Civil War general William Tecumseh Sherman by naturalist, James Wolverton who served under Sherman in the 9th Indiana Cavalry.
