Great Man Made River Project in Libya

Great Man Made River Project in Libya (Google Maps)

This is the last collecting pond where the pipe (in light blue on the map) splits just to the west into the northern (to Benghazi) and western (to Tripoli) segments of this massive engineering project.

Ancient water is drawn from acquifers in the south (you can follow the pipe) and gravity fed down to this holding pond.

There was enough concrete used in this project to make a road 12 feet wide to the moon.

Wow, a '10' :)

If you follow the pipes, you will find many other collecting ponds.
They all seem to be 900-1000m across. There are 2 just SE of Benghazi, and others to the west.

I saw this pipeline being built, and you wouldn't believe the sheer size of the pipe segments, and the convoys of tractor trailer trucks...dozens and dozens of them...each carrying 1 segment. I have some pictures from 1993 lying around that I might scan if I can find them.
