Found on April 14, 1845 as the first public insane asylum in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Through the years it has been known as Pennsylvania State Lunatic Hospital and Union Asylum for the Insane. For over 150 years the Hospital provided mental health care for a community of around 927,000 residents. In January 2006 the Hospital was officially closed down and Mental Health care was shifted to another hospital within Harrisburg.

In 1999 the hospital grounds were used for the filming of Girl Interrupted.
