Charles de Foucauld (9/15/1858 - 12/1/1916) was a Frenchman who served as a cavalry officer in the French Army, an explorer, a geographer and later a Catholic priest and hermit. In 1911 he built this hermitage in the Sahara desert in Algeria. He was assassinated in 1916 by tribal raiders. The church considers him a martyr and started his beautification process in 1927. He will eventually be canonized.
