Howland Croft was born in 1839 in Yorkshire, England, and eventually ended up in Camden, New Jersey, where along with several partners, he started a worsted mill. Worsted is a type of yarn and the fabric made from this yarn. The name comes from Worstead, a village in the England. The mill is now all but a pile of bricks, but was still operating until the mid-1950's. Great history and pictures at the linked website.
