Hownsgill Viaduct

Known locally as the 'Gill Bridge'. Hownsgill Viaduct was built by a Railway company in 1857, in order to transport materials to a booming North East Steelworks industry. Along with the collapse of the Northern Industry in the 1920s, the railway was partially removed and the local towns railway was completely demolished in 1981. Though, the historic viaduct still remains today.

The 700ft long brick-built bridge stands at 175ft above a dry ravine.

Unfortunately, because of its sheer height, the site is now known as a notorious suicide spot and thrill-seeking place.
