In 1936 the first elections for the Baseball Hall of Fame were held by the Baseball Writers of America (BBWAA) and the special Veterans Committee. Obstensibly in order to be inducted, the player had to receive 75% of the votes on both group's ballots. The five who received enough votes were: Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson and Walter Johnson.
