The Indian Motocycle Manufacturing Company started producing motorcycles in 1901 as the Hendee Manufacturing Company after founder George M. Hendee. The current name came about in 1923. After changing hands many times, the company was purchased in 2011 by Polaris Industries. Polaris moved manufacturing of the motorcycles to Spirit Lake, Iowa.
