James H. Dooley was a lawyer, business leader, politician, and philanthropist who was a key figure in construction of the Richmond and Alleghany Railroad, and represented Richmond in the Virginia House of Delegates.

Dooley built this home, "Maymont", in the elaborate Gilded Age style in 1890. It was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in1971.
