James Lanier was an entrepreneur who lived in Madison, Indiana prior to the outbreak of the American Civil War (1861–1865). Lanier became a wealthy banker with interests in pork packing, the railroads, and real estate.
Since 1983, the home has been owned by Kuwaiti billionaire, Bassam Alghanim. Alghanim inherited a stake in Alghanim Industries, a diversified company founded by his late father Yusuf and chaired by his brother Kutayba. The business has a stake in Gulf Bank of Kuwait, sells GM and Honda cars, and owns a consumer electronics retailer.
