The JH House is a refined contemporary residence located in a leafy residential area of São Paulo. Designed by Bernardes + Jacobsen Arquitetura and completed in 2008, the project reflects a sophisticated response to urban living, combining privacy, openness, and a strong connection to nature.
The house is organized around a central internal garden, which acts as the core of the design. This courtyard brings natural light and vegetation into the heart of the home, creating visual connections between different spaces while offering a tranquil atmosphere within the dense city environment. The layout is carefully planned to balance social interaction and private retreat.
Distributed across three levels, the residence places the main living areas on the intermediate floor. Large sliding glass panels open these spaces to the exterior, allowing the living room, dining area, and outdoor terraces to merge seamlessly. The use of the same travertine stone flooring indoors and outdoors reinforces this continuity and enhances the sense of spatial fluidity.
The upper level houses the private bedrooms, arranged around the void of the internal garden. The main suite enjoys privileged views of the swimming pool, gardens, and covered veranda, while maintaining privacy from the other bedrooms. Wooden brise-soleil elements provide sun protection and contribute warmth and texture to the façade.
The lower level accommodates service and support areas, including the garage, laundry, staff quarters, and technical spaces. This functional distribution reflects contemporary urban living, where efficiency and clear circulation are essential.
From the street, the house appears discreet, partially concealed behind lush landscaping that softens the architectural lines and enhances privacy. The JH House stands as a strong example of Brazilian contemporary residential architecture, showcasing clarity of form, thoughtful spatial organization, and a seamless integration between architecture and landscape.
