He dominated Ivy League hurdles events for two years, setting Harvard records along the way. On the Memorial Day weekend in 1958, he shaved the 220-yard low hurdles mark to 23 seconds on the first day, and the 120-yard high hurdles record to 14.2 seconds the next. He won both events for two straight years in the outdoor Heptagonal meet, captured both titles in the IC4A meet in 1958, and for good measure took a fifth Heptagonal title indoors in the 60-yard high hurdles. When points were needed he also ran the 220-yard dash and a leg on the relay team. Typical was his performance against Yale in his junior year when he won four firsts.
