John Nicholas Brown was the United States Assistant Secretary of the Navy (AIR) from 1946 to 1949. He was a member of the Brown family that had been active in American life since before the American Revolution and who were the major early benefactors of Brown University.

Brown's Newport mansion Harbor Court was inherited by his wife and, after her death, it was sold to the New York Yacht Club to serve as its Newport station.
