The Johnson Hall State Historic Site was the home of Sir William Johnson (1715-1774) an Irishman who became the British Superintendent of Indian Affairs in the Province of New York. Johnson learned the Mohawk language and had a strong relationship with the Mohawk and the rest of the Iroquois. Johnson commanded Iroquois and colonial militia during the French and Indian War.
