Built in 1932/33 over Peene river the Karnin Vertical Lift Bridge was a 35 meter high vertical railway lift bridge, which replaced a rotating railway bridge nearby.

On April 28th, 1945 the bridge was destroyed by German troops, however only the ramps, but not the vertical lift part of the bridge, which is still in astonishingly good condition.

Today the vertical bridge lift section remains standing, no longer a bridge but a strange industrial island in the middle of the Peene river.
